The
Ledge is quickly approaching
a major milestone within the realm of literary magazine
and small press publishing. Our next issue, to be published
this spring, will be our twentieth anniversary issue! I
can hardly believe it's now been twenty years since that
blustery spring day in Tompkins Square Park, NYC, when we
put together by hand that very first offset copy of the
magazine and dropped off consignment copies of the issue
at various independent bookstores in the area; legendary
shops such as Spring Street Books, St. Mark's Bookstore
(the old one on St. Mark's Place), Phoenix Bookstore on
Jones Street, The Bridge on East 7th Street off Avenue A,
Niko's on 6th Avenue and E. 11th Street, and the iconic
Gotham Book Mart uptown. I also remember we celebrated with
beers at The Back Fence on Bleecker Street followed by 50-cent
hot dogs at Gray's Papaya on 6th Avenue and East 8th Street,
before going underground and taking the L train back to
Myrtle Avenue, Brooklyn. Your support of this magazine has
kept it thriving throughout the years, and we invite those
who haven't had the opportunity to enjoy The Ledge
to order a copy today (shipping is still FREE) for their
reading pleasure! We are a fully independent literary magazine
and small press publication, and we truly appreciate your
support!
Background:
Founded
in 1988 by its editor-in-chief and publisher Timothy Monaghan,
The Ledge Poetry & Fiction Magazine is published
annually and presents new work by both established and emerging
poets and writers. Each perfect-bound issue of The Ledge
Magazine features over 200 pages of cutting-edge contemporary
poetry and fiction by a diverse and eclectic group of contributors
of all backgrounds and persuasions. The Ledge is
open to all styles and schools of writing. We firmly believe
that superior writing appeals to a wider audience than most
literary journals endeavor to reach, and consider The
Ledge Poetry & Fiction Magazine a truly democratic
publication in that regard.
The
Ledge is nationally distributed by Ubiquity Distributors
(Brooklyn, NY), and our circulation of 1,500 copies per
issue includes 750 subscribers.
The
Ledge also sponsors annual fiction and poetry awards
competitions, and an annual poetry chapbook competition.
For complete guidelines to any or all of these competitions,
please click on the "Upcoming Contests" link at
the top of this page.
