Background

Founded in 1988 by its editor-in-chief and publisher Timothy Monaghan, The Ledge Poetry & Fiction Magazine is published annually and features new and exciting work by both established and emerging poets and writers.

The Ledge is open to all styles and schools of writing. We seek compelling stories that employ innovative language and complex characterization. We especially enjoy ironic stories with a sense of purpose. We dislike careless, contrived or pedantic writing. We also seek passionate and provocative poems that utilize language and imagery in a fresh, original fashion. We favor poems that speak to the human experience as well as more industrial poems. We want inspired, imaginative, well-crafted verse, and we publish both formal and free verse poems. We firmly believe that superior writing appeals to a wider audience than most literary journals endeavor to reach, and consider The Ledge Poetry & Fiction Magazine a truly democratic publication in that regard. Each issue of The Ledge features approximately 300 pages of work by poets and writers of all backgrounds and persuasions.

The Ledge also sponsors annual fiction and poetry awards competitions, and an annual poetry chapbook competition. For complete guidelines to any or all of these competitions, please click on the "Contest Guidelines " link at the left of this page.
